5 Levels of Safety Cutter Protection: Essential Guide

Safety levels of safety cutters are divided into 5 categories:

Level 1: Basic (Not Safety-Oriented)
These are standard utility knives where the blade has snap-off segments to expose a new sharp edge, and the handle allows the blade to be locked in an extended position.

Level 2: Moderate Safety
A safer category of blades that do not have snap-off segments; when the blade becomes dull, it must be replaced or reversed. The handle is equipped with a spring mechanism to ensure the blade retracts automatically after use. To cut, you must push the slider forward; once you release it, the blade automatically retracts back into the handle.

Level 3: Intermediate Safety
Similar to Level 2, the blades have no snap-off segments and feature an automatic spring retraction. However, this level adds an "intelligent retraction" system: the blade automatically retracts as soon as it loses contact with the material being cut, even if the user is still holding the slider down.

Level 4: High Safety
In this category, the blade is concealed within the handle, providing high-level protection to the user and significantly reducing the risk of accidental lacerations during work. These handles are often hook-shaped.

Level 5: Maximum Safety
These are tools designed with no exposed sharp edges, such as high-strength plastic cutters for paper or specialized safety scissors. They offer the highest level of safety for the user.
